Description
Thoughts of a baby hawk -- by Renee Trenholm
I'm still just a baby
A tiny little hawk
Barely able to fly
Mom left me here
On this funny branch
But I can hardly see
So far across the land
She promised me lunch
I hope she comes back soon
This art piece began with a photo I took of a baby hawk in 2006 with a less-than-great camera. The little hawk looked so pitiful sitting on top of an old ladder that we had turned into a hanging station for bird feeders. The top of the ladder turned out to be a nice point of interest in the final image.
I chose a warm golden Daily Texture that nearly matched the hawk's coloration. The hawk photo was put through Topaz Simplify to give him a painterly look and to bring out detail and focus that was lacking in the original photo. I painted in his eyes and beak in PhotoImpact because Topaz Simplify was unable to discern the facial features. It was then layered onto the texture and the background was masked out. With a tiny bit of tweaking, I was able to reach a pleasing coordinated look between the feathers and texture colors. Texture was poofed all around the hawk and the ladder for a softer look. I intended to be done at that point but, as I sat looking at that little face, his thoughts began running through my head. I composed the somewhat disconnected thoughts that a baby hawk might have into prose that fit the mood of the image.
