Description
A Flower Born In Space is my playful representation of the amazing news, "First ever flower grown in space makes its debut!" Tweeted from the International Space Station by astronaut Scott Kelly on January 16, 2016.
The first zinnia had finally bloomed, which is no small feat because growing zinnias can be tricky, and zero-gravity conditions can wreak havoc on plants' ability to grow properly. The zinnia grown in space appears similar to those grown on earth except that it has curled petals because of its different environment. Scientists use a combination of red, blue, and green LED lights to simulate sunlight in order to successfully grow plants in space. Experiments on growing vegetables in space have been conducted for years and experiments on flowering plants and vegetables will continue in hopes of long-term missions being possible with the astronauts' ability to grow their own food en route to their destinations.
My flower was, of course, grown on earth. Beginning with a dark background, I used a stylized zinnia flower image, several texture layers, and ended with a modified NASA photo to give the full effect of a flower growing in space.
