Description
This image shows a pile of Buddha's Hand fruit. It is ornamental and fragrant and has a thick peel and only a small amount of acidic flesh with no juice. Its primary uses are for fragrance in the home, for making zest which is used like lemon zest, and for making a candied citrus peel. Buddha's Hands can be found in some grocery stores in autumn. It is so named because the curled fingers resemble hands clasped in prayer. The fruit can be found with straight fingers as well as curved fingers. A Kiwano melon is shown at the lower right. These exotic fruits are often displayed together. Although it is most widely grown in China and Japan, it is also grown in Southern California, generally being grafted onto root stock. photograph copyright Renee Trenholm
